One Move to Master It! The Complete Guide to Quickly Identifying Synchronous Belt Models

Synchronous belts (also known as timing belts) are core components in equipment transmission systems. Like gears, they transmit power through precise meshing of their teeth. If damaged, the entire device may shut down. When replacing them, the most critical step is accurately identifying the model.

Choosing the wrong model can cause slippage, abnormal noises, accelerated wear, or even immediate failure. Don't worry—just follow these steps to become a timing belt identification expert.

Step 1: Directly Read the Markings on the Belt (Most Reliable Method)

The vast majority of timing belts have their model number printed directly on the back or tooth surface at the factory. This is the most direct and accurate method.

You need to locate this “identity code”:

It typically consists of a combination of letters and numbers.

Common model number formats explained:

Example 1: 840-8M-20

840: Represents a pitch line length of 840 mm. This is the effective circumference of the belt.

8M: Indicates tooth profile and pitch. 8 denotes an 8 mm pitch, while M signifies a rounded tooth profile. This is one of the most commonly used tooth profiles today.

20: Represents a belt width of 20 mm.

Example 2: 1200-HTD-8M-30

1200: Denotes a pitch line length of 1200 millimeters.

HTD: Specifies the tooth profile as High-Performance Drive teeth, also a type of curved tooth.

8M: Indicates a pitch of 8 millimeters.

30: Represents a width of 30 millimeters.

Step 2: Precise Measurement if Markings Are Worn (Alternative Method)

If the model on the belt is faded, don't panic. We can reverse-engineer the model through measurement. You'll need a flexible ruler and a straightedge.

Three core parameters require measurement:

Pitch

What is it? The distance between the centers of two adjacent teeth. This determines the tooth profile.

How to measure?

Method A (Recommended): Select a clear tooth. Measure the distance from its center to the center of the 11th tooth, then divide this distance by 10. This minimizes error.

Method B: Roughly measure the total length of 10 teeth, then divide by 10.

Length

What is it? Typically refers to the pitch line length—the total length of the line connecting all tooth centers on the belt.

How to measure? Wrap a tape measure snugly around the belt's tooth root (the bottom of the teeth) to measure the circumference. This value closely approximates the pitch line length.

Width

What is it? The lateral width of the belt.

How to measure? Simply measure directly with a ruler.

Match measurements to model codes:

Measured pitch is 8mm → Typically corresponds to tooth profile 8M or HTD 8M.

Measured pitch line length is 1000mm → Corresponding length code in model is 1000.

Measured width is 20mm → Corresponding width code in model is 20.

Ultimately, the model you infer might be 1000-8M-20.

Remember: The correct model ensures stable equipment operation. Taking a few minutes to identify it accurately can prevent unnecessary losses and downtime.
